California Fairs lost all state funding and are finding different ways to operate and cut costs. Landscaping has always been a big part of the fair but with reduction in staffing and limited budget the fair is turning to outside community organizations to help provide landscaping projects. Since all of our youth and most of the community attend events at the fairgrounds our club decided to help by giving back our time and efforts to help with the landscaping program.
How has 4-H helped?
Fort Jones 4-H members beautified flower beds at Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds. They designed the landscaping and will help to maintain the flowerbeds at the fairgrounds. The project provided a focal point that beautifies and informs. Learn more here>
The members learned about how to choose plants that were resistant to deer and that would make their flower bed appear more attractive to the people attending fair events. In addition, the members learned about landscaping techniques such as plant placement and choosing bark that was not too acidic so it would not affect the growth of the plants. They discovered that putting tall plants in the back and shorter ones in the front gives your flowerbed more eye appeal. To add to the landscaping project the members tied in an historical farm implement that showcased a significant change in farming history. Signage was included with the display to tell the history of the farming implement.
