There are many low income families in the Tri-valley area and many of the children in these families do not get to have a very happy holiday. There is much need for fun gifts and necessities too, like school supplies. The Del Arroyo 4-H Club presents an annual holiday event which provides holiday cheer for families in need.
How has 4-H helped?
In December 2011, Del Arroyo 4-H received a civic engagement grant to support the Children to Children Holiday Party that Del Arroyo 4-H coordinates in Livermore California. The Party is put on to help kids whose families have low incomes have a better Holiday. Our club hosts 800 to over 1,000 children each year at the party. Children make crafts, wrap a gift for their parents, indulge in delicious refreshments, and last but not least sit on Santa's lap and receive gifts. In addition to the toys and games that families receive they also receive backpacks, pillowcases, crayons, markers, and other practical items. Children also get a chance to thank their parents by selecting a special gift for them that they can take home to surprise mom or dad with! As this is a year round activity with all the shopping and preparations, there is always something to do. Del Arroyo 4H has been in charge of the party for the past 21 years.
The payoff of this project is that it helps community members feel better about the Holiday season. Del Arroyo 4-H invites other youth organizations to help with the party. This year one of our members invited Kohl’s Cares Associates in Action to participate. The 5 volunteers that were sent to the 2011 party loved helping the kids make crafts and the Kohl’s Livermore store manager said, “Please invite us to come back next year.” Many 4Hers love this event because there are many opportunities to help. As Amber, age 13, said, “I really appreciate how so many people chip in and contribute to the cause. It really makes me happy to help all the less fortunate children and I hope people continue to help others in the future.”
"Participating in the Children’s Holiday party, an annual 4-H Holiday tradition that brings fun and joy to the hearts of underprivileged children, is a terrific experience. . . (it) makes me feel good about myself and my 4-H club."
- Coleman, Age 12
Another volunteer, Coleman, age 12, shared, “Participating in the Children’s Holiday party, an annual 4-H Holiday tradition that brings fun and joy to the hearts of underprivileged children, is a terrific experience. Helping the kids make crafts is rewarding and makes me feel good about myself and my 4-H club.” The kids and parents are extremely thankful for all that 4-H and many other local organizations do to make the party a success.
